H2GO - QUENCH AS YOU WISH

Jul 2023 - Present | 3 min read

Enjoy worry-less quenching experience with sustainable grab and go design.

Building on our award-winning concept from MIT Urban Technology Week 2023, we are on a mission to transform hydration habits into a more sustainable urban lifestyle. H2GO deliver an innovative shared pre-filled reusable water bottle system, aiming to solve the fresh water access challenge faced by commuters in Hong Kong, and eliminate their reliance on disposable alternatives. In this article, you will find out how I sparkled the design of our solution and how I managed to revise the design based on later discoveries.

📌 What I did?

As the founder of H2GO, I am in charge of product development, project management and business operations. I successfully secured crucial funding from the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund through my strength in business pitch. Leveraging my physics and engineering foundation, I spearheaded the design of our core solution. I also learned about finance knowledges for business operation through workshops and courses provided from Cyberport.

📌 Why I did it?

Despite Hong Kong's status as a highly developed city known for efficiency and fast-paced living, residents often neglect mental wellbeing and sustainability. My goal is to create a service that helps people develop better habits, encouraging them to prioritize personal wellness and sustainable practices in their daily lives.

📌 Why it matters?

Our mission aligns with critical UN Sustainable Development Goals by addressing two pressing challenges: unsustainable consumption and public health. The current linear "take-make-dispose" economic model is depleting resources and generating excessive waste at an alarming rate. On the other hand, proper hydration directly impacts both physical and mental performance, yet urban residents consistently fall short of the essential 2.5-liter daily water requirement. By combining sustainable practices with public health solutions, we're working to create lasting positive impact.

📌 What is H2GO?

H2GO provides pre-filled fresh water sharing services for urban residents to build sustainable hydration habits. We aim to promote public health awareness and mitigate environmental crisis.

Evolution of Our Solution

1st Gen. — Reusable Bottle with Pneumatic Design

Our field research across Hong Kong's railway transportation network revealed three major findings:

  1. Idle Spaces: Despite a daily traffic flow of 3.7 million people, stations contain substantial unused spaces not designated for operations or emergencies.

  2. Limited Water Accessibility: Only 19.2% of metro stations offer water dispensers, showing a major gap in public water access.

  3. Behavior Patterns: Hong Kong commuters predominantly opt for bottled beverages from retail outlets instead of carrying their own containers.

These findings, coupled with Hong Kong's fast-paced work culture, reveal clear implications for public mental wellbeing. Research demonstrates that proper hydration is essential for optimal physical and mental performance, yet urban residents consistently fall short of the recommended 2.5-liter daily water intake.

Specifically, the heightened "hygiene" consciousness prevalent in Asian societies creates a significant barrier, resulting in low adoption of existing hydration solutions.

In response, I designed a prefilled sharing system with reusable water bottles featuring a pneumatic mechanism that separates the mouthpiece from the container, ensuring both hygienic refills and practical usability.

2nd Gen. — Detachable Smart-Cap

During development, I encountered technical challenges as the initial pneumatic design faced manufacturing complexity and unsustainable resource demands for long term operation, conflicting with our aim to create more by consuming less.

Revisiting the user journey revealed a simpler and cleverer solution: the "detachable smart-cap". This design allowing users to maintain their own drinking interface, by building trust through personal ownership. The cap features NFC technology for service access to our reusable containers, transit payments, and hydration tracking, while serving as a stylish accessory to display sustainable identity.

The key to meaningful change often lies not in forcing immediate behavioral shift, but rather in thoughtfully designing systems and mechanisms that naturally accommodate with existing needs and preferences.

I believe our human-centric approach, respecting how people intrinsically behave, defines the essence of design thinking through empathy, creativity, and psychological understanding.
