20th City 24hrs Marathon Digital Photo Contest

Sep 2023 | 3 min read

Take a pause. You will find out, the beauty have been there all along the journey

The 20th City 24hrs Marathon Digital Photo Contest is a unique competition spanning two consecutive days. Participants check in at 9:30 AM on Day 1 and visit four checkpoints (3 PM, 8 PM, 5 AM, 9 AM) at designated location. Each checkpoint has a different photography theme revealed sequentially. While photographers can shoot anywhere in the city, they must submit exactly four photos taken within each specific time period.

It’s about… Showtime!

Reflections

"Actions speak louder than words." Were it not for this contest, we might have forgotten the purest essence of photography. Only when we pick up our cameras and stride through this all-too-familiar city, thinking deeply, observing carefully, and feeling genuinely, do we discover that light and shadow have been here all along. It’s in the alleyways, amid the hustle and bustle, between footsteps and chances of encounters.

One in a Thousand

09:30 — One in a thousand - not as rare as one in ten thousand, nor as common as one in a hundred. While we can intuitively approach fleeting moments from a temporal perspective, we prefer to discover the serendipitous. An event, a stroke of fortune, a glimpse of beauty passing by. By emphasizing on contrast, we explore beauty that seems contradictory yet remains balanced within patterns. Take a closer look, the highlight of the work is exact the one-thousandth of the frame!

Four Primary Color

15:00 — Four Primary Colors, as the name suggests, reminds the C, M, Y, K well-known in offset printing. Initially, we planned to present the characteristics of each primary color independently through vibrant and saturated images. However, we realized that offset printing is ubiquitous - it is a part of life and an attitude as well. Simple color combinations work in harmony to create endless possibilities, subtly weaving through every aspect of our lives.

Time Tunnel

20:00 — A moment is an eternity. We are all swept along in the currents of time, aren't we? The camera grants us the power to master space and time. Through slow shutter setups and lens zooming, we freeze the bustling flows of people and traffic, capturing unchanging essence amid constant flux. Take a pause, I realize there is nothing else at journey's end, - just me and my own time tunnel.

undefined

Daylight Meteor

05:00 — Daylight and meteors - seemingly lie at opposite ends of the spectrum, yet perfectly aligned. Daylight symbolizes the beginning of day, whilst meteors are fleeting moments. Through the interplay of light and shadow presented in daylight, we highlight meteor-like visual imagery. The meteor-like clouds, the sanitation workers who only appear during daylight, and citizens hurrying through the hustle and bustle - each playing their role, shining like meteors, drives endless imagination.

Special thanks to Joshua Chang, my best partner on joining this amazing adventure with me. I couldn’t achieve this without you! Let’s do it once again in the future!
